In the 12th-13th centuries, one of the most famous religious centers was Goshavank Monastery. Here many historians and scholars have studied and worked. One of the scholars was Mkhitar Gosh. He was Armenia’s most influential legal expert and scientist. Mkhitar Gosh founded Goshavank Monastery. Then, he lived and created his works here. Furthermore, he was the one who established the first law library in Armenia.
Later, after his death, the monastery was renamed Goshavank. Before that, its name was Nor Getik (New Getik) near the destroyed monastery Getik. The complex consists of several religious and secular buildings. The unrivaled khachkar put in front of the one-naved basilica is the work of the skillful master Poghos in 1291.
Goshavank used to be one of the most famous religious and cultural centers in medieval Armenia. Now the monastery is one of the picturesque places in Armenia with amazing nature and friendly people.
