Here is the Jewel of Armenia! Lake Sevan is the pride and unparalleled beauty of Armenia. Additionally, Armenians also call it ‘blue-eyed beauty’. The Sevan is one of the largest freshwater high-altitude lakes in the whole world. It is also the largest water area in Armenia and in the Caucasus.
Lake Sevan is located in the Gegharkunik region at an altitude of about 1900m. The lake has a huge environmental, cultural, and economical significance.
Sights of the Sevan
On the shore of the Sevan, you can find a number of interesting sights to visit. Firstly, the Sevanavank monastery is on a peninsula stretching into the lake. It was an island until the mid-20th century. The monastery is there on the hill since as early as the 9th century.
Next, you will see the Hayravank monastery on the western shore. It is an incredible place to savour the scenery of the lake. Continuing the way, you will come to Noratous. This is an enormous cemetery of khachkars.
While wandering around the shore of the lake or the monastery you will see another interesting thing, Armenian gull flying over the lake. The Sevan is home to an endemic species called ishkhan (trout) as well. It is delicious and has a unique taste.
