Not far from Garni Temple, you can find Geghard Monastery. The monastic complex is a unique construction. Moreover, it is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The complex consists of many medieval buildings cut out of living rocks. Accordingly, the name of the monastery is Ayrivank. Naturally, the high cliffs and the Geghama Mountains surround the monastic complex. In a word, nature itself gives a special mystery to the site.
Originally, Geghard Monastery was built between the 4-13th centuries. Armenia adopted Christianity as a state religion. Afterwards, Gregory the Illuminator founded the monastery. Geghard Monastery is a highly valuable cultural centre. In medieval Armenia, it has had a school, library, rock-cut dwellings, and many other sections.
Furthermore, Geghard was also famous for the relics kept there. One of them is the Spear which wounded Christ on the cross. It had been in Geghard for 500years. And now you can see it in the Treasury Museum in Etchmiadzin.
At present, the Monastery of Geghard is one of the most fascinating and unique constructions in Armenia. It has an astounding landscape of natural beauty. Also, ancient history and powerful harmony are worthwhile. Hence, the monastery is the place where you will find inner peace and harmony.
