Amberd Fortress is one of the marvels of Armenian architecture. Moreover, it is ‘the fortress in the clouds’. The name actually has its roots. The fortress is on the slopes of Mt Aragats which is the highest peak in Armenia. Therefore, it is like in the clouds on cloudy days. Whereas, on clear days all the stars are visible from the fortress.
The principal architectural features of medieval fortress-building have found their reflection in this fortress. Being on a naturally well-defended cape, Amberd has served as an important military fort for a long time.
Next to this secular edifice, there is a church on the edge of the hill. duke Vahram Pahlavuni built the church in 1026. That is why the name of the church is Vahramashen.
