Tanahat-Gladzor monastery dates back as far as the eighth century. It has been one of the significant and highly appreciated places for Armenians for centuries. It is believed that Gladzor University has started from here. The university has been one of the most renowned educational institutions in the medieval period. Here, students have studied many important subjects such as Miniature Painting, Astronomy, Theology, Chronology, Geometry, Science, etc.
The main church St Stepanos was built in the 13th century commissioned by the Proshyans, a rich and prominent family in Armenia.
