Khor Virap is a majestic monastery in Armenia. The monastery is the place where St. Gregory the Illuminator had been kept for thirteen years. After that in 301, Armenia adopted Christianity as a state religion. Thus, Armenia became the first Christan country in the world. At that time the king of Armenia was Tiridates the III.
The monastery is located on the hill just in front of Mt Ararat. The view of the snowcapped mountain is awesome. And the name itself means ‘deep dungeon’ in Armenian. Moreover, visiting the monastery you will have the chance to climb down the dungeon and see the place where Gregory has spent 13years in solitude. The monastery dates back to 642CE.
Khor Virap has been an educational center during the long history. And now it is one of the most visited places in Armenia and has a great popularity.
