The town is situated in the valley of river Goris (or Vararak). Goris is an urban community and the 2nd largest city in Syunik province. The people of the town are very hospitable and welcome everyone to their houses and nicely arranged gardens. You will be speechless in case of food. It is extremely delicious.
The name ‘Goris’ is supposed to be derived from the Indo-European pre-language words “gor” (rock), “es” (to be).
The town is famous for the medieval cave-dwellings in the soft rocky mountains where Armenian people have lived for centuries. From here you can easily go to Tatev Monastery, Khndzoresk and Halidzor.
